How to talk to your hairdresser.
When you come to MANE we want you to leave with a hairstyle you love. It may be exactly what you pictured, a little different and better. It can be a journey getting there. We get it - sometimes you can have an image of the style you want in your mind so clearly, but when you sit in our chair all words and descriptions escape you. It’s our job to uncover this, but good hair really is a partnership between us and you. Preparation is key - we’ve put together some simple steps that will melt the hair language barrier and help you talk to us about the style you actually want.
Before we talk, come to the salon with clean hair
Come to the salon wearing your hair the way you usually do. If you always style your hair down don’t scrunch it up into a top knot. It’s important for your stylist to see how your hair looks currently, its texture, growth patterns and how you style it, so we create a look that will really work for you at home.
Take us up on a complimentary consultation
We always offer new clients a consultation ahead of booking an appointment and likewise if our loyal clients are looking at a creative colour change. This is so important for us to pool our ideas together, plan and pre-quote, so when an appointment goes ahead we’re both really confident with where we’re going.
A picture is worth a thousand words
As hairdressers we are visual people - often the best way to convey an idea to us is with photographs. Bringing in images of colours and cuts you love can be a great starting point. This also avoids any confusion with hairdresser lingo, for example a ‘cool blonde’ could be anywhere between ash and platinum, and we want to see that we’re on the same shade of cool.

Tell us about what hair products you're using at home
Even if you’re not using salon products at home, we want to know about it. This open communication is so important as what you use on your hair at home can affect the results we achieve in the salon. Some products can cause chemical reactions with colour, or cause it to fade quickly so it’s important we know ahead of starting any work.
Let your hands do the talking
Your hands are your best tool to show the length of the haircut you want. Sometimes talking in inches can get lost in translation - an inch can suddenly seem a lot shorter on your hair!
Express your doubts
Hairdressers aren’t mind readers (well not all of them!). Do speak up if there is anything you are unsure of, want advice on or need to reconfirm before or during your appointment. No question is a silly question and we really are here to have an open dialogue with you.
Listen to styling and product recommendations
Take the opportunity whilst you're in your stylist’s chair to engage their expertise on how best to care for and style your hair at home. The products they recommend really are suggested for a reason and play a key role in keeping your hair beautiful at home. If you forget anything or want further advice, call or message the salon and we’ll make sure your stylist gets back to you.
We know this can often be the toughest one to master, but honesty is the best policy. If you feel we’ve misunderstood something in your consultation or want to try something different do speak up, likewise if you have a budget restriction let us know - perhaps you can only buy home hair care or have a treatment today, we can guide you on the priority. We want you to like us and we really want you to love your hair.
