8 ways to help the planet with your routine...

When it comes to sustainability, we like to think the world is doing a better job of it. We love a reusable coffee cup and refill our water bottles; we’re big on bikes and buy packaging free groceries. One area you may not have thought about is your hair routine, so we’ve put together 8 helpful tips to give it some earth friendly TLC. As hair guru Kevin Murphy said it’s “...the everyday details that make a tremendous impact on our Mother Earth” - we couldn’t agree more:

  • Buy better bottles (and reuse them too)
  • KEVIN.MURPHY bottles are made in part from recycled ocean plastics. This means the plastic is literally trawled from the ocean, cleaned and processed to be used again - creating a cleaner home for sea life. Recycling your bottle is a great way to keep it in use, or get creative and repurpose it as hair accessories storage or a plant holder.

  • Break-up with the bottle
  • If your hair isn’t high demand or highly coloured, you may be able to use a cleansing bar. RabbitRabbit solid shampoo is packed full of nourishing natural ingredients such as organic jojoba oil, wheat protein and apple cider vinegar for a fresh zing! Whatsmore, it’s made right here in NZ, which means less product mileage. DM us @manesalonshop to find out more and we’ll have a stylist access your hair’s suitability to use a shampoo bar.

  • Take a break from heat
  • Take a break when you can from heat styling your hair, your locks will appreciate it - as well as the planet. Ask your stylist for some tricks to smooth your hair when blow drying so you can pass on the irons every now and then too.

  • Go organic
  • Organic isn’t just for your pantry - try natural rubber and cotton hair ties, or organic towels at home. According to The Textile Exchange there is less water use, soil erosion and smaller energy demands from organic, as opposed to conventional, cotton growers. At MANE we use biodegradable, bamboo fibre Bio-Towels, so you can have peace of mind when you’re relaxing at our basin.

  • Buy less, choose well
  • It’s the mantra of Vivienne Westwood, and it goes for hair too! A good hairbrush can last for years (ask our advice, we’re here to help). Salon shampoos, like KEVIN.MURPHY, are super concentrated so a little goes a long way - meaning you have to buy less bottles in a year compared to most supermarket shampoos.

  • Look for the PETA bunny
  • You may have spotted it on KEVIN.MURPHY products already, the PETA bunny logo is a certification that a beauty item is cruelty-free - meaning it hasn’t been tested on animals. It’s a point for our furry friends, as well as mama-earth, as non-animal methods tend to be less wasteful.

  • Shampoo your hair less
  • Skip a hair wash to reduce your water footprint (and water bill!). We have dry shampoo options from KEVIN.MURPHY and Eleven Australia in salon, which can tie you over for that extra day. Plus if your hair is being coloured or blow waved by our apprentice stylist Bella, be sure to ask her for some braiding tips which work well on second-day hair!

  • Sit back and relax, in a Sustainable Salon
  • If nothing else, by choosing us to do your hair you’re making a positive choice for the planet. MANE is a certified Sustainable Salon, meaning 100% of our colour tubes, tin foil and plastic bottles are recycled, and our hair clippings are used in initiatives such as making hair booms to soak up oil spills. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, read more here.
